Sander Schulhoff
Founder & CEO, Learn Prompting
Sander Schulhoff is the Founder of Learn Prompting and an Artificial Intelligence Researcher at the University of Maryland. He created the first guide on Prompt Engineering on the Internet, even before ChatGPT was released in October 2022! To this day, he has taught over 3 million people how to effectively communicate with Generative AI tools like ChatGPT. His guide (Learnprompting.org) is listed as a recommended resource by OpenAI and Google and has been featured in Forbes as the best course to learn Prompt Engineering. As a researcher, he has authored multiple award-winning papers alongside experts from OpenAI, Microsoft, ScaleAI, the Federal Reserve, HuggingFace, and others. His paper, HackAPrompt, was awarded Best Theme Paper at EMNLP 2023 (selected out of 20,000 submitted papers), cited by OpenAI in their paper on mitigating prompt injections, and used by teams at OpenAI, Amazon, and ArthurAI. His most recent research paper, The Prompt Report, co-authored with researchers from OpenAI and Microsoft, has quickly become the latest foundational prompting paper in the field, just weeks after its launch.

Our Story
Learn Prompting began as an English assignment in College…
For my class, I was tasked with writing an instructional guide. So I read a few hundred papers on Prompting over 2 weeks, built a site, and released it on October 2022 (before ChatGPT!). It quickly became an essential resource in the field.
Things really took off once ChatGPT was released. We became the only resource that taught people how to maximize ChatGPT’s outputs.
@RileyGoodside sharing the docs became the catalyst
Today, Learn Prompting is cited by industry leaders like Google, Wikipedia, O'REILLY, and Scale AI. It's also widely used by most Fortune 500 companies and major consulting firms.
It is also used internally to train employees at companies such as Google, Microsoft, Open AI, Meta, and more.
We went from reading research papers to building the Learn Prompting Docs… to writing our own research papers alongside researchers and companies like @OpenAI, ScaleAI, HuggingFace, Preamble, Microsoft, and more.
Our academic research on prompting and LLM Security has been cited by OpenAI on their most recent paper on Mitigating Prompt Injections, and was cited by US Government's NIST in their Adversarial AI paper.
Recently, we released our latest project, The Prompt Report. We returned back to our roots and read over 1,500 prompting papers to create the largest survey paper on prompting ever. This time, joined by co-authors from OpenAI & Microsoft. We are also continuously updating our guide to include this new material and keep our users at the cutting edge.
The guide that many of you read is still to this day, completely free and open-source, making it accessible to everyone. To keep the lights on, we launched a selection of paid courses with more in-depth and video content for those who want to dive deeper & get certified as AI Experts.
If you've ever seen another prompt engineering course or guide, there's a good chance it includes content from our open-source base. We estimate that ~50% of such materials draw from our resources.
We're honored to support the prompt engineering community, including our 3M+ users and 40K+ Discord members. Our community is at the heart of everything we do, driving us to keep innovating and sharing.
Thank you for being a part of our journey. Stay tuned for more updates and new content as we continue to lead the way in prompt engineering and generative AI!
